Here is some insight into what inspired the songs on the album JOURNEY:
DADS HALF POUND OF BUTTER – Was written from a story my dad told me of the hardships that he and his family endured through the great depression of the 1930′s and one of the ways he and his brothers would go about putting food on the table.
GABRIELLE – This song was inspired by the birth of our grand daughter.
28 SARGEANT ST – Is a visit to my past to a place my father built where I spent most of my adolescence. As I was putting the songs together for the album there was one song I wasn’t too sure would suit, and I wanted to put something new and fresh on it, a song I hadn’t written yet so I sat down and within two days I had it. This one was relatively easy cause the plot was already done I just had to put it to a song.
WHERE’S OLD HANK – In 1981 I went over to Nashville with a band called FOURCAST from Nth Qld and two sisters called The Gottani Sisters to compete in the inaugural “Seagram’s battle of the bands” competition, which was a fantastic experience for all of us. So when we arrived there the first thing I wanted to do was go straight to the Grand Ole Opry and that’s what I did but when I got there the place was shut up tight but I had fun milling around outside for a while so I thought I’d write a song about the experience. The part in the song about going night clubbing with the concierge was just a bit of creative license I put into the song to make it more interesting. Honestly!
SKELETONS (in my closet) – A song I penned out of the frustration of hearing about parts of my family tree that I didn’t need or really want to hear about. The thing is, we all have them.
GOIN’ BUSH – I’ve had a few experiences of the bush and its people from playing in bands at B & S balls and a few rodeos’ but I spent one week-end in Hughenden at there annual show one year, there to help my boss sell and promote his product. On the Sunday we delivered what we sold and some of the deliveries were to a couple of stations a fair way out of town.
We stayed for a cuppa and a quick chat at each delivery and one chat was about this lady’s son who went to the city to do a one-week course and stayed on for another two years and how much she missed him. That conversation stayed with me for a long time and finally I put it in a song and sent her son back home.
PLAYING WITH MY HEART – No matter how many times love kicks you when you’re down, don’t ever give up. Cause love definitely makes the world go round so why wouldn’t you give it another go. Just be more aware of the people who love playing games with your head and your heart.
SEND SOME LOVE – After being bombarded by the media with crime, catastrophe and consumerism, the bottom line is, when the chips are down, sending good vibes is probably the most useful thing we can do.
SHE – I wrote this song about a couple of good friends after going to their wedding in Townsville a while back.
I’d never seen a guy more smitten by love and I knew his life would be changed forever for the better, and it has. So I just had to write a song for them.
TURN & SAY GOODBYE – This song is not about my experience but when I wrote this one I was in a semi-depressed state of mind at the time, and when I sat down with my guitar my emotions were on high alert, so I thought how would I feel if I overheard someone say they had just met the love of their life and it turned out to be your girlfriend or your wife and so I started writing with that in mind.
COUNTRY LOVIN’ LADY – I first started writing this song 26 years ago while my wife, our three children and myself were living on a 5 acre property a little outside of our home town of Townsville in Nth Queensland. Our three kids had the time of there life living out there, and Barb my wife has always been a very creative person but out there she was so at home with living a sort of semi self sufficient life style, she was milking goats at 5 in the morning, making and hanging goat cheese all around the place, we had a garden that produced anything we wanted thanks to her, she sheared our two sheep with hand shears, there wasn’t anything she wouldn’t have a go at and at that time I had been playing in bands and trying my hand at songwriting for a few years and I wanted to capture a feeling of that moment so when I sat down to write it, the first thing that come into my head at the time was, she really loves this country way of life and the country really seems to agree with her, which led to She’s a country lovin’ lady and the country loves the lady so it seems.
It was one of those songs that did not come easy, I re-wrote it quite a few times and I remember Barb saying one time to “just let it go” but I couldn’t, I knew one day I would finish it. It just had to mature with age like a good wine Mmmm wine. This song also won 1st place in the 2006 TSA/SEQ songwriting awards.
